Skills in Demand (SID) Visa (SC482)

The Skills in Demand (SID) Visa SC482 replaces the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa (Subclass 482). This visa enables Australian employers to address labour shortages by sponsoring skilled workers from overseas when suitable candidates cannot be found within the Australian labour market. Employers must first meet the Labour Market Testing (LMT) requirements unless exemptions apply under International Trade Obligations.

This visa also provides a pathway for eligible workers to transition to permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186 – Transition Stream). To qualify, the employee must have worked for their sponsoring employer for at least two years out of the last three years while holding the Subclass 482 visa.

To apply for a Subclass 482 visa, the nominated occupation must be listed in the legislative instrument LIN 24/089 (CSOL). There are three streams to access this visa:

  • Specialist Skills stream:
    For highly skilled applicants with a proposed salary not lower than $135,000 p/a
  • Core Skills stream:
    Available for most of the applicants as the standard stream. The salary offered cannot be below $73,150.
  • Labour Agreement stream:
    For those employer who have entered into a Labour Agreement with the Department of Home Affairs.

The The Skills in Demand (SID) Visa SC482 visa process involves three key steps: sponsorship, nomination, and a visa application. Certain positions may be subject to additional requirements, depending on any applicable caveats imposed or mandatory skills assessment. This visa also allows for renewal, offering flexibility for both employers and employees.

Since the 7th December 2024, applicants need to demonstrate at least 1 years of work experience on a full time basis to be eligible. All the occupations in CSOL gives a pathway to permanent residence via SC186 Transitional.

Employer Nomination Scheme Visa (Subclass 186)

The Employer Nomination Scheme Visa (Subclass 186) is a permanent visa designed for skilled workers nominated by their employer. This visa offers three distinct pathways:

  • Temporary Residence Transition Stream (TRT):
    For non-Australian employees who have worked for their sponsoring employer for at least two out of the last three years while holding a Subclass 482 visa.
  • Direct Entry (DE) Stream:
    For applicants who have obtained a positive skills assessment, demonstrated at least three years of work experience in their nominated occupation, and achieved a Competent English The nominated occupation must be listed in LIN 24/093 to be eligible for this pathway.
  • Labour Agreement (LA) Stream:
    For employees working for employers who have negotiated a specific labour agreement with the Australian government.

Skilled employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) Visa (SC494)

The Subclass 494 visa is a provisional visa available for skilled workers sponsored by employers located in designated regional areas. It provides a clear pathway to permanent residency after living and working in a regional area for three years.

The occupations eligible for this visa are listed in the legislative instrument LIN 19/219, which includes a broader range of occupations compared to other employer-sponsored visas.

Key eligibility requirements:

  • A positive skills assessment in the nominated occupation.
  • At least three years of full-time work experience in the nominated occupation.
  • Achieving a Competent English

Training Visa (SC407)

The Subclass 407 visa is designed for individuals pursuing workplace-based training or professional development in an occupation listed in the legislative instrument LIN 19/050.

This visa involves three main steps: sponsorship, nomination, and the visa application.

The main requisites are:

  • The applicant must demonstrate employment or study experience of a minimum of 1 year full time
  • The above must have occurred in the preceding 24 months immediately before the nomination
  • The visa length can be for up to 2 years and it is now an alternative for those ineligibles for the Subclass 485 Graduate Visa due to age restrictions introduced under recent changes.
