General Skilled Migration (GSM)

Overview

The General Skilled Migration (GSM) program is designed for skilled professionals and technicians under the age of 45 who wish to migrate to Australia based on their qualifications, skills, and work experience. It operates through a points-based invitation system that evaluates various factors, including the applicant’s occupation, skills assessment, English proficiency, and eligibility for state or family sponsorship.

Process:

1. Identify Occupation:

The applicant must identify their occupation on the legislative instrument LIN 19/051, which lists eligible occupations.

Undergo a skills assessment with the relevant assessing authority for the chosen occupation.

Meet the points threshold (currently 65 points) and demonstrate a minimum of Competent English proficiency. Points can be gained through factors such as age, work experience, qualifications, partner points, English level and additional criteria like state nomination or family sponsorship amid others.

Submit an EOI through the SkillSelect system, detailing qualifications, experience, and other factors relevant to the points test.

Applicants may pursue state nomination (if required) or secure sponsorship from eligible family members residing in regional Australia.

Wait for an invitation to apply for a visa based on the EOI.

Once invited, submit the visa application.

Visas Available Under GSM:

1. Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189):

  • Permanent residency visa.
  • Open to applicants whose occupations are listed in the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) under LIN 19/051.
